During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton talked about how he had the “worst balance ever” in his Mercedes Formula 1 car and found it difficult to move forward.
Mercedes’s choice to use new power unit components that were more than Hamilton’s allotment for this campaign meant that Hamilton was doomed to a difficult race.
Due to setup changes outside of parc ferme, the Briton started the race in the pit lane and expressed his displeasure at having to manoeuvre the W15 around Baku.
Prior to a late collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, Hamilton struggled to move up the order and looked like he might finish outside the points in the eleventh position.
Hamilton elaborated on the difficulties he faced in the cockpit and described how he had to modify his style of driving to overcome the constraints of the vehicle.
“It was the worst balance I have probably ever had,” lamented Hamilton, who finished in ninth place and earned two points. “Among the worst equilibriums.
“Basically, I had to turn because I had so much front end and no rears.
The reason is not your driving style.
To break the front’s traction and slide the front through every turn, I had to yank the steering.
I have never had to drive in such an odd way.
“I was aware that I could not catch up. It is hard to follow in the middle; by the end, at least, it should be near.
I am not sure why our side’s pace was so poor.
